the outcast
The Outcast
sax quartet + flute
The Outcast explores the social-musical dynamics of introducing a rogue instrument into a conventional ensemble. The flute struggles to assert itself against the power and unity of the sax quartet, finding itself buried and unheard. As the piece progresses, it makes several attempts to break out, each time either silenced, ignored, or derided by the other instruments. In the end, the members of the ensemble utilize their individuality and eventually come to mutual musical agreement.
